This course introduces educators to a service learning approach to lesson planning. In service learning, educational outcomes are attained through participation in community projects at the school, local, or national level. Service learning projects enhance students’ teamwork and problem-solving skills, and prepare students to apply their education to real-life problems.

Each week of this 6-week course, covers a step in designing a service learning lesson plan while discovering relevant theories and research. Weekly online chat sessions and discussion boards offer opportunities for teachers to pose questions, debate best practices, and to receive feedback from the Afrooz facilitator and fellow participants. teachers also have the opportunity every week to work one-on-one with the course facilitator to resolve challenges and discuss the course material. By the end of this course, participants design a service learning lesson plan for their classrooms and present it to their fellow educators for feedback.
